Syri vi Ezerrye becomes the 9th General Director
Eix Easway - The shock resignation of Metallityöt from all offices, including the General Directorate, on 8 April 2024 caused a vacuum of power in the position of chief of government, leading to the Excellent Syri Meizcherni Moughamadan vi Ezerrye, 2nd Marquis of Pomoresia, to be unanimously elected by the 10th Assembly to serve as the 9th General Director of Easway on Sunday, 14 April. This election comes exactly one year after Syri was last elected into the office.
The position of chief head of government and minister of foreign affairs shall be served by an independent during this term of the 10th National Directorate. Syri, the only-ever practising Muslim in the position of chief of government, will be faced with the ongoing crisis between Israel and Iran, the economic shift of Easway as it continues to reposition away from Russia and towards the West, and the continuing realignment of the Easwegian social sphere as more rural conservative voices take positions of authority. Syri, unanimously backed by the Assembly and close to former Grand Councillor Emizerri, will have to be firm in crafting his own political identity and become seen as a leader.
Syri previously served as 6th General Director from 14 April 2023 to 25 May 2023 during the interim period as the National Directorate's commonwealth divisions were unified federally. He was ousted after the national elections when he did not receive over 50% of Assembly votes, the cause largely being seen due to his vacation from the Solidarity party he was elected on. Solidarity, a self-described far-left libertarian socialist or communist party, once was the dominant party in the nation and influenced many of the progressive policies Easway enjoys today. Over the last year, the party has largely been sidelined in favour of independent coalitions, many nationalist. Though Gaia, leader of Solidarity, shrugged off this opinion when they were successful in legalising gender-affirming surgery for trans people in the Supreme Court last June. They have since supported Syri, suggesting that he may lean towards the progressive lense.
Whatever the case may be, all eyes are on Syri vi Ezerrye and who he will seek to work with and what policies he will set as General Director. His actions now will be fundamental in receiving another round of unanimous support following the May elections next month.
