The Foreign Ministry establishes the Easwegian Association of Gökçeada

Authored by Grand Councillor Suqeruli Bai, Başkuruli Bey

Today, the Co-operative Government of Easway establishes the Easwegian Association of Gökçeada to represent as the central ancestral hub Easwegians within Easwegian Turkey. The island within the west of Turkey, known as Qaiversou in Ezerryen, was a place of trade and settlement within the far-western reach of the Easwegian Continuum in the early first millenium. These Easwegian clans made allegiances with the then Roman Empire, and those who stayed integrated with the neighbouring Greeks, Bulgarians and Turks. Today, there exists a significant diaspora here.

The purpose of the Easwegian Association of Gökçeada shall be to represent Easwegian interests on the island through sponsorship of Easwegian cultural works in tandem with the Turkish and Eastern Christianity traditions. We affirm our recognition of the sovereignty of the Republic of Turkey over the islands, and Easwegians shall aim for further cultural and political recognition, whilst firmly remaining proud of their Easwegian-Turkish identity. Afterall, the history of many Easwegians is the history of association and influence of Turkic cultures, most notably the Khazar Khaganate. Many Easwegians today abroad are proud to call Turkey their home, and wish to culminate their Easwegian identity alongside.

In Co-operation We Stand
