The Emperor; Ezerryen: Zerrich; was the definitive chief of state from the Creation of Easway in December 2017 until the completion of the Transitional Movement in July 2022. The role was renamed in English to Grand Councillor and existed until dissolution of the Common Realm in 2025.

The Emperor as chief of state held powers as speaker of the Assembly and as commander (or co-commander)-in-chief of Easwegian national defence. 

There was one Emperor: Emizerri Tannurai. Though, legally, the position of Emperor was the same as that of the Grand Councillor, due to its name being the same in our now national language of Ezerryen. Therefore, Zerrich is the constant.

The title came with distinctive powers of imperium over the Directorial Federation Constitution, and is fondly remembered as a source of unity. As described in Emizerri's 2023 Ultimate Speech "The people referred to me as Emperor, in reference to Rome and in defiance of the Kingship of Norway which lays claim to our lands to this day. Admittedly, adopting this title was perhaps in error to adopt a dynastic title with pride, but it did create a unity in leadership which we were desperate for and which Desourre advised me to not alter."

Those who supported the continuation of the title of Emperor were known as loyalists. The most vocal loyalist was Don Cho, who paradoxically at points led the National Republican Party of Easway. Don Cho has always been a close ally of Emizerri and supported his strength in leadership. Though virtually all people supported the republican characteristics of Easwegian governance, that is the directorial federation, later loyalists such as Devaade Raizerni supported the ascension of the House of Zerri to a regal status and the return of the Imperium.

From 2017 to 2020, Easway was referred to as a 'sovereign republic with a regal overseer.' It was renamed to a co-operative union in 2020 through ratification of the Directorial Federation Constitution. This ratification also changed 'All decisions in law are held by the Emperor, whereas the laws and the act of figurehead for the people, the President of the Mainland of Easway on Beeren Eylandt and former Bjørnøya will create and hold, until death.' to 'All power is held by the Government and the people of Easway.

The powers of Imperium were given back to the Emperor in June 2020 by the Sixth Amendment. Due to the struggles against the organisation 1925, political parties were outlawed pending struggles in incorporating the island of Hopen. Therefore, the Emperor and the newly created Marquis of Hopen were given powers to create amendments and to veto amendments.

The Tenth Amendment in November 2020 gave the people more power, by allowing constitutional amendments to be held by popular vote. Though, the position of Emperor and Marquis retained the powers of imperium. 

2021 saw the relegalisation of parties. In September 2021, the Assembly passed a constitutional bill on the Prohibition of Extremism to outlaw fascism and communism. Lobbied heavily by the communist Gaia Grìbhinneach, Emizerri was persuaded to write an addendum to this bill to save communism. Termed Emizerri's Art of the Deal, communism was renamed to despotism, which was defined as prohibiting cults of personalities and 'despotic vanguardism.'

The 2022 Transitional Movement, also known at the time by its supporters as the Republican Revolution, made up of republican parties such as the the Republican People's Party of Easway led by Gaia and the Pomory Reform Party of Easway led by Demitrou, saw the renaming of Emperor to Grand Councillor through the very imperium which was thereafter abolished. Emizerri hailed it as a win for the values of the directorial federation and upholding the 2020 constitutional promise for the Emperor to 'be diminished of power once all main co-ordination efforts for Easway have been achieved.'

The story of the role of Emperor can only be remembered through its supporters and its opponents. From the loyalists of Don Cho, to the republican leader of the Transitional Movement of Gaia. Roles are just names and the power afforded to them by the legal system. What makes them great is what we do with them, and the emotion of the movement.

'Now it's been many years. Easwegians have cried a billion tears. For what they never knew. Now the Emperor's reign is through. But through the eternal light. The twinkling of starlight. So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday. In the year 2025, if Easway is still alive, if woman can survive, they may find, ... the proliferation of directorial and republican ideals.'
