The Genesis of Easway

 The Genesis of Easway

This article is written as a first-hand account and authored by Emizerri for the House of Zerri records.

Last week, Easway celebrated its 11th anniversary of Origin Day, remembering the founding of the Cyber Circle on 20 October 2015 under the name of Ezerrye, between myself Emizerri and Mikoumou.

The founding of the Cyber Circle, between two close friends, could almost be seen in passing as insubstantial, if not for the larger project it spawned into. But it is important to remember these early days, as it gives us the background of the Assembly, the Emando Forces, and the Common Realm of Easway that followed.

The Cyber Circle was formed not long after the sacking of Thomas Nilsen, the chief editor of the Barents Observer, a newspaper which covered the high-north. The Cyber Circle began its mission by condemning this. Easwegians have always stood for free expression.

Myself and Mikoumou met through the Dataless822 community, a Minecraft community built around a YouTuber who notably built grand projects which stretched the possibilities of the game. Notably, he built practical and interactive worlds with massive buildings, farms, and forums and a lively server. This served as a staging ground for many of the ideas which the Cyber Council had in moving forward with worldbuilding and eventually nationbuilding. During the early days of the Cyber Council, Skype served as the main form of communication.

The name of the Cyber Council gained its name from the use of the internet to spread the ideas of Ezerrye. By 2017, I, who had used many different aliases had gained quite a reputation on Discord. But before that, I spent a lot of time searching for inspiration to build a new nation. I attribute the seeds of my inspiration to two people, the gaming YouTuber Matt Shea and the artist Magic Hanzo.

Matt Shea comes from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, from Fogo Island. Fogo Island is a small and remote island off of Newfoundland, with a population of only a couple thousand. In remember in 2016 looking at Google maps at this island, fascinated by the few houses along roads and urbanism. In fact, this inspired me to look at even more of Canada. I noticed that by randomly zooming in to different parts of Canada and then branching outwards, I was surprised by how vast yet unpopulated the country is. It was fascinating to me. I discovered Matt Shea himself from when I was playing Sims 4 and searching for people making videos on it, of which he was at the time.

Somewhat geographically related, I also looked at Alaska, where the online artist Magic Hanzo was from. An Alaskan woman with a Polish name, I don't quite remember how I found her profile, but I interacted with her quite a bit over a couple of years from 2016 to 2017. Nice person, good heart. Though she did not live there, from learning about Alaska I found out about the town of Whittier, cut off from major settlements and where most people reside in simply one apartment building. I found this type of communal living inspiring. Both of these you can see finally inspired me when creating the nation of Easway. Remote, arctic or near arctic living, but with a communal spirit.

Emizerri revisiting Holy Island in 2023

Finally, visiting Holy Island as a kid was a major inspiration. An island which is only available a couple of times by road a day, the rest of the time separated by water. When you walk around the island, it almost feels like an abandoned village. In short, it feels entirely artificial when speaking of the economy, as it is not self-sustaining. Building on this, I thought, what if a nation took these challenges but had the grit to become self-sustaining and thrive.

With all of this in mind, Bear Island eventually became the obvious choice for the starting point when creating the nation of Easway, now known in histography as the Common Realm.

With these facts in mind, I hope people reading this have a clearer picture of the beginnings of Easway, and what we celebrate with Origin Day. I think it is important to honour a deputy in the project who was there with me in the beginning, Mikoumou, and to also recognise the inspiring creators whose hardy spirits I find in some ways came from the interesting places which they grew up.

Ezerrye lei reun!
